Supportive Periodontal Maintenance
Following any periodontal treatment, it is essential to maintain a regular schedule of supportive periodontal cleanings. This ongoing phase of treatment will allow your periodontist to assess your oral health and make sure the infection stays under control.
During a supportive periodontal cleaning, the periodontist and the dental hygienist thoroughly examine your mouth. Any new calculus and bacterial plaque formations are carefully and gently removed. Antimicrobial rinses and fluorides may be applied as well as localized delivery of antibiotics as needed.
Supportive periodontal cleanings are generally non-invasive and comfortable. Although they do not require local anesthesia, we will do everything we can to make the experience comfortable and relaxing.
Periodontal disease is a chronic disease like diabetes and heart disease. Without careful, ongoing evaluation and supportive treatment, the active infection will return. If you have a regular dentist, an alternating schedule can be arranged. If you have dental implants, it is equally important to alternate your dental visits with the treating periodontist to insure optimum health and stability of the dental implants.
